Some possible saints turn their backs on their Lord because they find His teachings nonsensical, too absurd for assent. How similar to our own day in that everyone wants Jesus to “make sense” to us, religion to look pious and socially virtuous, but “return to their former way of life” when doctrine and discipline ask too much.
