STATEMENT FROM PRIESTS FOR LIFE CANADA

RE: ROE VERSUS WADE DECISION

A VICTORY FOR SANITY, TRUTH, AND JUSTICE

The United States Supreme Court has struck down the almost 50-year-old ruling legalizing abortion in overturning the infamous Roe versus Wade decision today. In a highly complex judgement hinging on states’ rights and the legal incoherence of the original judgement, the Supreme Court Justices have again opened up one of the most explosive issues in the United States.

Priests For Life Canada welcomes this decision. It will mean that the decades long battle to defend the rights of preborn children by our neighbour to the south has reached a significant and long-awaited milestone. For generations our fellow pro-lifers have laboured, suffered, prayed, and organized to overturn this black mark against human life. Millions of preborn children have died in the American abortion holocaust and the pro-death forces seemed triumphant. They were not.

We congratulate all those who have worked so hard and tirelessly for this moment. Yes, the fight is not over, but state by state more protection will follow for the most vulnerable of Americans. The pro-death voices will be shrill and too many media outlets will return to the lies and calumny that was (and is) standard before 1973. Each state will need to be won to the pro-life cause.

In Canada, our abortion obsessed Prime Minister will continue to cynically act as if he is running for the American Congress and use truly deathly hyperbole in reacting to the American judicial decision. Violence may be seen against churches and prolife centers, prolife judges or workers. The battle must continue.

But for now, today- fortuitously on this Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – fount of love for humanity- let us give praise and thanks to God that sanity has returned to our great neighbour and that preborn children will be safe again.
