26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (October 1, 2023)
Ezek 18.25-28; Phil 2.1-11; Mt 21.28-32
Like the House of Israel in the First Reading, many people today who suffer greatly complain “The way of the Lord is unfair”. As a result, many of those with debilitating diseases or infertility advocate for gravely immoral remedies, such as embryonic stem cell research and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
The Lord speaking through the prophet, Ezekiel, however, teaches that rather than being punished for the sins of our ancestors, we must assume responsibility for our own choices: when we choose iniquity, we will suffer death and when we choose to do what is right and just, we will live.
Whether we have had or abetted an abortion or IVF or encouraged euthanasia or embryonic stem cell research, so long as we convert to the Lord and His ways, we will live.
Like the prostitutes and tax collectors in the Gospel, past sin is not an obstacle for those who choose life in the Kingdom of God.
