Ascension of the Lord (May 21, 2023)
Acts 1.1-11; Eph 1.17-23; Mt 28.16-20
Many couples choose abortion because they say the child was “an accident.” Others choose the same over fears of financial stress, lack of support, career hiatus, loss of freedom, or potential health risks to the child. In response, Jesus reminds us that He is with us always, “to the end of the age.” Each child is conceived under His providential care. Each parent is strengthened by His love. He is not promising that these difficulties will cease completely, but that, whatever we endure, He will be there to sustain us with His grace.
St. Paul tells us that all things are under Christ’s power. So, we need not fear anything. St. Francis de Sales beautifully expresses this in his prayer entitled ‘Your Cross:’ “This cross He now sends you He has considered with His all-knowing eyes, understood with His divine mind, tested with His wise justice, warmed with loving arms and weighed with His own hands to see that it be not one inch too large and not one ounce too heavy for you.” Let us trust that Our Loving Father is still there with us even when we must face an uncertain future.
