Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (January 1, 2024)
Num 6.22-27; Gal 4.4-7; Lk 2.16-21
On this great solemnity, we celebrate Our Lady’s first and most important title as the “Holy Mother of God.” The Blessed Virgin was able to know and do God’s will primarily by reflecting on events that happened and were happening.
Of course for differing reasons, there are many young women today who, like Mary, are surprised to find themselves with child. Perhaps they even contemplate having an abortion.
A new year calls Christians to imitate Mary in reflecting, sorting out, and understanding. We ought to help abortion vulnerable women ponder the glories of motherhood and how the birth of a single child can radically change both their lives and the world for good.
Motherhood is truly an exalted calling and God bestows on each mother an abundance of graces so that she may have the strength to fulfill her duties. Each child is a child of God, and He will not fail to protect each mother to whom He has entrusted one of His children.
