3rd Sunday of Lent (March 20, 2022)
Ex 3.1-8a, 13-15; 1 Cor 10.1-6, 10-12; Lk 13.1-9
Our names disclose our identity; they teach us that we cannot know who we are until we know whose we are. We have forgotten this in our day, as we treat our names so casually.
Yet it was not so in the ancient world. To give one’s name was both an act of trust and an invitation to intimacy. That is why the event described in the First Reading is earth shattering: God called Moses by name!
God calls us by name too, on the day of our baptism, and again, at our confirmation.
And the Holy Name of God, given to us as a sign of trust and an invitation to intimacy, is the very name spoken by the Lord Jesus of Himself: “Before Abraham was, I am.” This is insanity, unless He’s the Living God. What’s more, the Lord Jesus reveals to us another name of God: Emmanuel – God with us. In our battle for a civilization of life and love, and despite our setbacks and opposition, let us never forget this!
