Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God (January 1, 2023)

Num 6.22-27; Gal 4.4-7; Lk 2.16-21

  • On this great solemnity, we celebrate Our Lady’s first and most important title as the “Holy Mother of God”. The Blessed Virgin was able to know and do God’s will primarily by reflecting on events that happened and were happening.

  • Of course, for differing reasons, there are many young women today who, like Mary, are surprised to find themselves with child. Perhaps they even contemplate having an abortion.

  • A new year calls Christians to imitate Mary in reflecting, sorting out, and understanding. We ought to help abortion vulnerable women ponder the glories of motherhood and how the birth of a single child can radically change both their lives and the world for good.
