Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (May 30, 2021)
Deut 4.32-34, 39-40; Rom 8.14-17; Mt 28.16-20
On this great solemnity of our Triune God, we reflect on this central mystery of Christian faith and life and its connection to marriage.
St. John Paul II taught that man is the only creature that God willed for its own sake and that since man is a person, self-fulfillment can only be achieved through a sincere gift of self. He also argued that the model for this interpretation of the person is God himself as Trinity, as a communion of Persons.
Thus we can understand why the errors of our age concerning the purpose of marriage are so completely at odds with a true interpretation.
For instance, when unmarried couples live together, there is no true and sincere gift of self, but a forgery of a true gift; they are not modeling their relationship on the inseparable unity of the Most Holy Trinity. So, their circumstances set them against the ultimate reality which Christ so lovingly revealed about His inner life, which is a complete and total gift of self.
