21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (August 25, 2024)

Josh 24.1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Eph 5.21-32; Jn 6.60-69

  • Among all the stories of Our Lord being rejected in the New Testament, today’s is, in some way, the most poignant.

  • Some possible saints turn their backs on the Lord because they find His teachings nonsensical, too absurd for assent. How similar our own day in that everyone wants Jesus to “make sense” to us, religion to look pious and socially virtuous, but “return to their former way of life” when doctrine and discipline ask too much.

  • Do we suffer from a “Cafeteria Catholic” mentality? Do we pick and choose which of the Church’s teachings on the Gospel of Life to follow? Or do we trust as confidently as Peter professed: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
