19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (August 11, 2019)

Wis 18.6-9; Heb 11.1-2, 8-19; Lk 12.32-48

  • We each have a task, like the servants in the parable. When the Lord returns, He will call each of us to give an account of what we have done. The faithful will be rewarded; the lax punished. So, we must be diligent in fulfilling the task that the Lord has given to us: to proclaim the Gospel of Life.

  • We are also called to have faith in God; to trust God. Abraham, in his old age, was called by God and was given a mission and a great purpose for his life. Abraham believed God; He trusted in God and in His promises.

  • In our current culture, the elderly are often treated as though their lives were without meaning and purpose; a burden to society. But, God, who is the author of life, has extended their days for a purpose.

  • Pope Francis in his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei, traces the history of faith from Abraham and demonstrates how the Incarnation reveals the ultimate object of faith: Jesus Christ. Unless we believe in Him we cannot understand His designs.
